Erasing the faces of hunger

Fighting hunger and poverty in the Philippines

Poverty and hunger are intertwined challenges that devastate individuals and communities of the Philippine population, especially the 23.7% of Filipinos living below the national poverty line. We believe that we cannot end hunger unless we break the cycle of poverty.

You’ll find data illustrating the deep connection between hunger and poverty and the complex web of issues contributing to this situation.

Disasters’ Impact on Food Production

The Philippines’ rural inhabitants primarily depend on agriculture, especially farming and fishing. However, agricultural productivity in Provinces is highly susceptible to flooding, landslides, and drought.

These calamities disrupt food production, damage infrastructure, displace communities, and strain their capacity to cope with hunger and food insecurity. In addition, these people have limited options for off-farm employment, further exacerbating the problem.

What is Food insecurity?

People who lack regular access to sufficient quantity of safe and nutritious food while living an active and healthy life are categorized as food insecure by the Food and Agriculture Organization.

How do food insecurity and poverty relate?

Poverty is a significant driver of food insecurity. Poor people often lack the financial resources to purchase nutritious food regularly, leading to food insecurity. Conversely, experiencing food insecurity can further push individuals and families into poverty, negatively impacting their health, productivity, and overall well-being.
